Women Redefining politics. By Benitah Maria Namuddu

Women no longer waiting to be invited into the room they’re walking in

This is  a new chapter quietly unfolding.

For years, politics in Uganda often felt like a space women had to fight hard just to enter. But now, something is shifting. More women especially young, educated, and determined are stepping forward, not as spectators, but as participants shaping conversations that affect their lives and communities.

You see it in moments like this: a woman walking side by side with her peers, not behind them. Focused. Composed. Visible.

Across institutions like Electoral Commission of Uganda and within different civic spaces, the presence of women is becoming harder to ignore. From student leadership to national platforms, they are raising their voices on issues that matter—education, healthcare, employment, and representation itself.

But this rise isn’t without resistance.

Politics remains a tough arena. Expectations, stereotypes, and sometimes outright pushback still exist. Women are often judged more harshly, questioned more deeply, and challenged in ways their male counterparts may not be. Yet, despite this, they continue to step forward.

And that’s what makes this moment powerful.

Because it’s not just about numbers increasing it’s about perception changing. It’s about young girls growing up seeing women not only voting, but contesting, debating, leading. It’s about normalizing something that once felt exceptional.

There’s also a quiet confidence in this generation. They are educated, connected, and aware. They understand the systems they are entering, and more importantly, they are ready to navigate and challenge them.

And this time, women are up on board not on the sides
